Inhouse, and in-sourcing of, public transport operations – a collaborative research agenda

In Sweden, local public transport is delivered almost exclusively by contracted operators. A few regions and municipalities continue to run all or part of their services in-house, and some have recently decided to bring previously contracted operations back in-house. Knowledge remains limited about in-house provision, the reasons for insourcing and the ideas about how public transport should be organised that shape such decisions. The project will review existing knowledge, identify gaps, and map practical and normative considerations which influence decisions to in-source operations. The project results in a research agenda, formulated  jointly by researchers and public transport authorities.
