Long-term effects of a school-based mobility campaign: Active and independent mobility for school children and their families
Children’s independent and active mobility has declined in recent decades, while physical inactivity and car dependency of families have increased. Parents’ travel habits and perceptions of social norms play a significant role in this. Addressing these developments, this project studies how school-based mobility initiatives can make a lasting contribution to more sustainable travel habits amongst children and their families, through public transport, walking and cycling. Through a longitudinal survey study combined with in-depth interviews, the project follows parents of primary school children taking part in Västtrafik’s ‘På egna ben’ initiative. In addition to the effects on journeys to school, the study examines parents’ attitudes towards children’s independent travel, the interplay with parents’ travel habits, and trips to out-of-school activities.
