Professor Maria Börjesson is one of Sweden’s leading researchers in transport economics and transport policy analysis. She is Professor in Economics at VTI Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute and Adjunct Professor in Economics at Linköping University.  Her research covers how transport systems affect accessibility, the climate and environment, gender equality, health, road safety and personal security, as well as economic and labour-market outcomes.

She studies behavioural responses, public acceptance and the welfare effects of measures such as infrastructure investments; the operation and maintenance of transport infrastructure; congestion charges; fuel taxes; electrification policies; public transport pricing and supply; company-car taxation; and rail access charges. Her research also includes methodological development of cost–benefit analysis and transport models. She combines advanced econometric methods, transport modelling and welfare economics.
