Social impacts of free access to public transport

The purpose of this project is to contribute to an increased understanding of the social impacts of free access to public transport, with a particular focus on low-income families with children in the city of Malmö, Sweden. The project is based on the work of Skåne Stadsmission together with Skånetrafiken to provide access to public transport to low-income families in the city of Malmö, by distributing summer passes (Skånekort) and one-day tickets in public transport for people with low-income.

The results are expected to contribute to the existing knowledge gap in research regarding the effects of free access to public transport, with particular focus on social impacts. The project will also shed further light on the issue of the cost of public transport from a more equity-based perspective and provide additional support and knowledge to the ongoing public debate, potentially leading to policy recommendations.
