Presentation

Devon McAslan is a researcher in sustainable transport and mobility at Chalmers University of Technology. His work explores urban planning, policy and governance issues related to sustainable transportation transitions. His research focuses on how cities plan and build sustainable transportation solutions and emphasizes finding ways to better integrate land use planning, transportation, and urban design that will enable cities to reduce automobile dependence by promoting walkability and transit use.

Specific areas of work include the role of parking regulations on travel, shared mobility (such as car sharing, bike sharing, and shared cargo bikes). Devon also examines neighborhood planning and 15-minute cities and the link with public transport in Swedish municipalities. A major focus of Devon’s work is on the impacts and practices of car-reduced and car free urban development in an international context. This work considers the design, planning, implementation and impacts of different urban environments and transport solutions and their role in fostering more sustainable cities and travel.

Devon also conducts research on smart mobility and emerging technologies, which investigates how these can be leveraged to create more sustainable and equitable transportation systems. The focus of this work is on understanding how cities think about and develop public policy for new and emerging technologies and services. A main interest is on the role that new technologies, like automation, play in public transport and what this means for car free urban development.

Devon has worked internationally with municipalities, transit agencies, housing companies, private mobility providers, technology companies, and others on applied research projects that answer socially relevant questions related to mobility transitions. Devon has a background in urban and transportation planning, with a Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from the University of Michigan (2018) and a professional degree in urban and environmental planning from Arizona State University (2010).
