K2 Knowledge Lunch: She Drives – How Ukraine Is Working to Get More Women Behind the Wheel
The war in Ukraine has had a severe impact on the transport sector. With many men mobilised to the front, the shortage of bus and lorry drivers has become critical. Through the She Drives project, Ukraine has taken bold steps to address this challenge while opening the door to a new profession for women.
Today, more than 200 women are training to become professional drivers through this programme and are preparing to change their career paths. Along the way, Ukraine has had to address a number of challenges, including a demanding training process, a lack of modern training vehicles, employer requirements for prior experience, persistent stereotypes around so-called “non-female” professions, and difficult working conditions in the transport sector.
At this K2 Knowledge Lunch, Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, will share insights from the implementation of the She Drives project and explain how it is helping to transform the transport sector in a time of crisis.
The project is implemented by the Foundation for Institutional Development, initiated by the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, in partnership with UN Women, and with financial support from Sweden.
